One of the most common mistakes truck cap buyers make is assuming they know their bed size. You’d be surprised how many people buy a cap that’s 2 inches too short or 3 inches too long — because they guessed instead of measured. This guide will show you exactly how to measure your truck bed so you get a cap that fits perfectly.
Unlike most truck accessories, a cap has to seal tightly against the bed rails on all four sides. A cap that’s even slightly off won’t seal properly — you’ll get wind noise, water leaks, and a cap that rocks or rattles while driving. Getting fitment right isn’t just about aesthetics; it affects weather protection, security, and how the cap locks.
Open your tailgate and measure from the inside face of the bulkhead (the wall behind the cab) to the inside face of the tailgate when it’s closed. Don’t measure the outside of the truck or the frame — measure inside the bed box.
<div class="blog-tip">Pro Tip: Have someone hold the tape at the cab end while you pull it to the tailgate. Measuring alone often results in the tape bowing and giving a false reading.
Common bed lengths you’ll encounter:
Measure from the inside of one bed rail to the inside of the other at the top of the rails. Also measure at the floor level — some beds taper slightly. Caps are designed to sit on the top rails, so the top measurement is what matters most.
<div class="blog-tip">Watch Out For: Ram trucks with the RamBox option have storage built into the rails, which changes the inner bed width. A standard Ram cap will not fit a RamBox truck without modification.
Even within the same model name, manufacturers change bed dimensions between generations. For example:
Always go by your truck’s exact model year, not just the generation nickname. Check your registration or the door jamb sticker if you’re not 100% sure.
Regular cab, extended cab (SuperCab, Access Cab, King Cab), and crew cab (SuperCrew, Double Cab, Crew Max) trucks of the same model often come with different bed length options. Know which cab style you have, as it determines which bed lengths were available on your truck from the factory.
Once you have your measurements, call us at 231-773-0005 and we’ll confirm whether the cap you’re looking at will fit before you buy. We know our inventory and we’d rather spend 5 minutes on the phone with you than have you deal with a cap that doesn’t fit.
