Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying, selling, fitment, shipping, and installation. Can’t find your answer? Our team responds in under 2 hours.

Buying
How do I find a cap that fits my truck?

Use the search filters on our Shop page to enter your truck’s make, model, year, and bed length. Results will automatically narrow to caps that are compatible with your specific truck. If you’re unsure, contact our fitment team and we’ll match you manually — usually within 2 hours.

How much can I save buying used vs. new?

Most buyers save between 40–70% compared to buying new. A brand-new LEER or A.R.E. cap can cost $1,500–$3,500 installed. Quality used caps in those same brands typically list between $400–$1,200 depending on condition, age, and features. Dealer trade-ins and lightly used commercial caps offer the best value.

Is it safe to buy a used truck cap online?

Yes — when you buy through UsedTruckCaps.shop. Every seller on our platform is verified before they can list. Listings include detailed photos, condition ratings, and accurate specs. Our fitment team reviews listings for accuracy, and payments are processed securely. We’re not a classifieds board — we’re a structured, vetted marketplace.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Affirm for buy-now-pay-later options. All transactions are encrypted and processed through a PCI-compliant payment gateway.

Can I negotiate the price with the seller?

Some listings allow offers, which will be indicated on the product page. Where offers are enabled, you can submit your offer and the seller will accept, decline, or counter within 24 hours. Fixed-price listings cannot be negotiated through the platform, but you can contact the seller directly via the listing’s message button.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. We offer financing through Affirm, which lets you split your purchase into monthly payments. Rates and terms vary based on your credit profile. You can check your eligibility at checkout with no impact to your credit score.

Fitment
Will a used truck cap definitely fit my truck?

Fitment depends on your truck’s make, model, year, and bed length. Our listings specify exact compatibility, and our fitment team can cross-reference your specs to confirm a match before you buy. Always verify bed length — short bed, standard bed, or long bed — as caps are not interchangeable between sizes.

How do I measure my truck bed length?

Measure from the inside of the bulkhead (cab end) to the inside of the tailgate when it’s closed. Common bed lengths are:

  • Short bed: 5.5–5.8 ft
  • Standard bed: 6.5–6.6 ft
  • Long bed: 8 ft

If you’re unsure, check your owner’s manual or look up your truck’s VIN at the NHTSA website for exact specs.

Can I get fitment help before I buy?

Absolutely — and we encourage it. Contact our fitment team via the Contact Us page or live chat with your truck’s year, make, model, and bed length. We’ll confirm which listings in our inventory are compatible and flag any potential issues before you commit to a purchase.

What if the cap doesn’t fit after I receive it?

If a cap was listed with incorrect fitment information and doesn’t fit your truck as a result, contact us within 7 days of delivery and we’ll work to resolve it — including facilitating a return or exchange. If the fitment issue is due to an error on the buyer’s side (e.g. incorrect bed length provided), standard return terms apply. See our Returns & Warranty section for full details.

Shipping
How are truck caps shipped?

Truck caps are large, bulky items and are shipped via freight (LTL — Less Than Truckload) carriers. This is different from standard parcel shipping. Your cap will be palletized or crated, picked up by a freight carrier, and delivered to your address or a nearby freight terminal for pickup. Delivery timelines and options vary by location and listing.

How much does shipping cost?

Freight shipping costs are calculated based on distance, weight, and dimensions. Typical costs range from $150–$400 for standard LTL delivery within the contiguous US. Exact shipping costs are displayed on each listing page before checkout. Some sellers offer free local pickup as an alternative.

Can I pick up locally instead of shipping?

Yes. Many listings offer local pickup at no additional cost. Pickup availability and location are shown on each listing page. If you’re within driving distance of a seller, pickup is often the fastest and most affordable option — and lets you inspect the cap in person before taking it home.

How long does freight shipping take?

Freight shipping typically takes 3–7 business days within the contiguous US, depending on distance and carrier availability. Remote or rural areas may take longer. Once your order ships, you’ll receive a tracking number from the freight carrier so you can monitor delivery progress.

Do you ship outside the contiguous US?

Currently, freight shipping is available within the 48 contiguous states only. We do not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or international destinations at this time. If you’re located in AK or HI, please contact us — in some cases we can arrange third-party freight forwarding at the buyer’s expense.

What do I do when my freight delivery arrives?

Before signing the delivery receipt, inspect the cap thoroughly for any shipping damage. If you notice damage to the packaging or the cap itself, note it clearly on the delivery receipt and take photos immediately. Do not refuse delivery — accepting while noting damage protects your ability to file a freight claim. Contact us within 48 hours of delivery if damage is found.

Condition & Quality
What condition ratings do you use?

Every listing is rated on our standard condition scale:

  • Like New — Minimal or no visible wear. Often dealer take-offs or trade-ins with very low use.
  • Good — Normal wear consistent with age. May have minor cosmetic imperfections that don’t affect function.
  • Fair — Visible wear, possible cosmetic issues. Fully functional but may need minor touch-ups.

Photos in each listing accurately reflect the actual cap. If you have questions about a specific listing’s condition, contact us before purchasing.

What are dealer take-offs and why are they a good buy?

Dealer take-offs are caps removed from new trucks at dealerships — often because a customer ordered a different configuration or didn’t want the cap at all. These caps typically have zero or very low mileage, are in like-new condition, and are often factory color-matched. They represent some of the best value on our platform since they’re essentially new caps at used prices.

Are the listing photos of the actual cap I’ll receive?

Yes. All photos in our listings are of the actual item for sale — not stock photos. We require sellers to provide clear photos showing the cap from multiple angles, including any areas of wear or damage. If a listing has insufficient photos, contact us and we’ll request additional images from the seller before your purchase.

Selling
How do I list a cap for sale?

Click “Sell a Cap” in the navigation menu and complete the seller registration. You’ll need to provide your cap’s make compatibility, brand, model, condition, photos, and asking price. Our team reviews all listings within 24 hours before they go live to ensure accuracy and quality.

What does it cost to list a cap?

Listing is free. We charge a small seller fee only when your cap sells successfully. The fee is a percentage of the final sale price and covers payment processing, platform maintenance, and buyer support. Full fee details are shown during the seller registration process.

Can dealerships or businesses sell in bulk?

Yes. We have dedicated commercial seller accounts for dealerships, fleet managers, and truck accessory shops who need to list multiple units at once. Commercial accounts receive priority listing review, dedicated account support, and reduced seller fees on volume. Contact us via the Bulk / Commercial option on our Contact page to get set up.

Installation
Can I install a truck cap myself?

Many truck caps can be installed at home with basic tools and a helper. Most caps clamp onto the truck bed rail and take 1–2 hours to install. However, if your cap has sliding windows, brake lights, or interior wiring, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper sealing and electrical connections.

Do you have installation partners near me?

Yes. We partner with truck accessory shops and installers across the country. After purchase, contact our team with your zip code and we’ll connect you with a vetted installer near you. Most installations are completed same-day or within a few days of scheduling.

How much does professional installation cost?

Professional installation typically costs $75–$200 depending on your location and the complexity of the cap. Caps with wiring (brake lights, interior lights) are on the higher end. This is significantly less than dealer installation, which can run $200–$400 or more.

Returns & Warranty
What is your return policy?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery if the item is significantly not as described. The buyer is responsible for return freight costs unless the return is due to a listing error or shipping damage. Items must be returned in the same condition as received. Custom or modified caps are not eligible for return. Contact us within 7 days of delivery to initiate a return.

Do used caps come with a warranty?

Warranty coverage depends on the individual seller and listing. Some caps — particularly dealer take-offs — may still be within their original manufacturer’s warranty period. Others are sold as-is. Warranty details are always listed on the product page. If warranty coverage is important to you, filter for “Like New” condition listings and look for the warranty badge on the listing.

What if my cap arrives damaged from shipping?

Note all damage on the freight carrier’s delivery receipt before signing, and take photos immediately. Contact us within 48 hours of delivery. We will help you file a freight claim with the carrier and work to get you a replacement or refund. Do not discard the packaging until the claim is resolved.
